What are you listening to? An interview with Sonia Harezga
WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING TO?
AN INTERVIEW WITH SONIA HAREZGA
HER BACKGROUND
What kind of role does music play in your life? Well for Sonia Harezga, it plays a huge
part in not only her day to day life, but her goals, views, and self reflection.
Growing up as a first generation Canadian changed the way Sonia experienced childhood and still today. Growing up with traditional Polish parents is hard for some people to understand, they have certain morals and standards that will stay with them for the rest of their lives. They will not change as the times change, this is where Sonia had to adapt, not only to her family but for herself.
Sonia always had a passion for music, not only listening to it, but also playing a wide variety of instruments. She began playing Piano in classical and jazz band, this slowly evolved into her picking up the saxophone, clarinet, and ukulele, but anytime Sonia could, she would pick up her friend’s instruments to learn as much as possible. Now she continues to work on growing her skills by playing the keyboard at home and learning a wide range of songs.
WHATS IN HER HEADPHONES?
The average 20 year old, fashion student might be put in the box of listening to whatever is on the top 100 that week. What makes Sonia unique isn’t just her passion for mechanics, kick boxing, and powerlifting. She also had such a diverse music taste that influences her in her everyday life. Growing up she always had a taste for fashion, she always was a step ahead of her peers and had the next best thing, a lot of this fashion sense came from the music she listens to.
“I feel like each genre of music has an aesthetic and the music you listen to has this domino effect, you listen, you have an image in your head and how it makes you feel and it translates into what you pick out of your closet and when you go shopping and it spirals from there, even if you don't think about it too much.”
Some of Sonia’s favourite genre’s include 90’s punk, and alt pop. Immediately hearing that , you can get an image of who she identifies as. Instead of finding inspiration from pop culture, she focuses on the sounds and vibrations of music and goes with the flow of how those songs make her feel that day. Sonia proves how no matter where you grow up, and what your traditions are, it is so important to stay in touch with yourself and be the best version of you possible. Sonia proves that you do not need to fit the mold of traditional society, to be who you want to be. Her passions prove how influential something as simple music can be for your individuality and sets a standard for young people finding themselves.
