FINDING YOUR PERSONAL STYLE

FINDING YOUR PERSONAL STYLE IN A WORLD FILLED WITH MICRO-TRENDS

WHAT ARE MICRO-TRENDS?

micro-trends are defined as average trends that “rise to popularity quicker and then leave the trend

cycle faster,” contributing to ultra-fast fashion.

In the world of social media, micro-trends are more prevalent than ever. Trying to discover your

personal style becomes harder when there are influencers coming up with a new trend monthly.

For the average person, this is not feasible. Today we’re going to look at some tips on how to find

your personal style, and not being influenced by influencers.

KEEP TABS ON WHAT YOU (ACTUALLY) WEAR

Keeping a log of what you wear on a day to day basis, will help you realize what your favourite styles are,

and what you feel most comfortable in. When keeping tabs, you are easily able to look back and see

what styles you wear most often, so when you go to the store you know what will actually be worn when

you get home. With these pieces, there are so many ways to style them, in ways you will feel confident in.

BECOME AN OUTFIT REPEATER

This doesn’t mean every day, it just means you can wear the same outfit more than once. You can change up the accessories each time, or change the shoes, the options are endless. For some people, this might be difficult to do, due to feeling judged (especially in the fashion world.) Realistically, most people are more concerned with themselves to notice if you have worn that outfit twice in one week.

DON'T BE FOOLED BY REPETITION

If you don't like something the first time you see it, and it didn't grow on you over time, don't buy it. This happens so frequently with designer items, for example, they mass send out a new bag to influencers. Just because they are sponsored, doesn't mean it's actually stylish, you’re just seeing it over and over, which in turn influences you to purchase them. Keep in mind how you felt when you first see something, if you didn't like it the first time, follow your intuition, that is your personal style.

WHAT HAVE YOU ALWAYS LIKED?

There's a difference between thinking something is “cute” and actually purchasing it and wearing it. Look back into your past and think about what you've always been drawn to. It may be easier to find a niche aesthetic that you like, ballet core, grunge, Y2K, etc. Are there pieces/outfits in your wardrobe that you love? You can even look at other categories that don’t necessarily relate to fashion (music, cars, celebrities). These different things can influence you in a different way than modern media. These things are what you like, regardless of if it's trendy or not, these are the pieces that you will always gravitate towards.

Finding your personal style can all be boiled down to thinking about what you like as a person, and staying true to yourself. It is easy to be influenced by the media, but it's important to think about what you like at the end of the day. Just because something is no longer “trendy” does not mean you need to throw it out. If you like it, keep it, wear it, and be confident. That is your personal style.
